Search Engines or Humans: Which is Most Important?

This is my favorite SEO debate. Which comes first the user or the search engine? For my money, the user comes first – but only for a moment. I identify a market of human users I want to reach. The next few steps are all SEO , checked against usefulness for humans, of course, but always with the eye on the search engines. Build it and they will come doesn’t work on the Internet. You can have the most interesting, human friendly site in the world, but if you haven’t engineered it to appeal to search engines in any way, there’s a good chance it won’t have a chance to charm anyone. Of course, you can also market your site through other avenues, but since most visitors reach web sites through Google or another search engine, it’s either SEO or PPC. Or so I see it.
